After a lenghty restoration, Fort St. Elmo is now open to the public and well worth the walk down Republic Street and the bastion walkway. The fort, whose history goes back to t he late 13th century, now houses the National War Museum, which displays a collection of items dating back to prehistoric times, as well as two halls dedicated to the islands' role in World War I and II. Of note area Gloucester Sea Gladiator N5520 Faith, Roosevelt's Jeep Husky and Malta's award for gallantry, the George Cross.
